What is it?

Constructivism

What does Constructivism mean to you?

Constructivism: Learners build or reshape their current knowledge/skills by exploring an issue with students. They determine what they need to know and how they will figure that out

(just kidding)

Who Contributed to the Idea?

Dewey (Early 20th Century) Cognitive conflict to initiates and organizes the learning process

Jerome Bruner (1961), -Discovery Learning-

1 .Calls for new learning environments that promote discovering ideas and rules instead of memorizing them.

2. Instruction needs to involve experiences that make students feel ready and willing to learn.

3. Knowledge needs to be structured in a way that can easily be understood by the learner

Lev Vygotsky (published in 1950s; popularized in 1970s): Learning happens through social interactions within one's Zone of Proximal Development, and it is later internalized

H.S. Barrows (1989): Learning happens through social interactions within one's Zone of Proximal Development, and it is later internalized

How Can It Be Applied?

Students will work in groups to create checklists for evaluating the credibility of sources that they find online, test them on sources with false or unsupported information, share their findings, and reflect on their work.
