Human Performance Technology (HPT)
...We use the HPT Model to perform a front-end analysis and determine whether what instructional or non-instructional interventions we need to design:
What is it?
Based on Pershing’s definition (2006): Human performance technology is the study and ethical practice of improving productivity in organizations by designing and developing effective interventions that are both results-oriented and in alignment with an organization’s values and goals.
Who Contributed to This Idea?
Gilbert (Many see Gilbert as the father of HPT): He argued that instruction is not always the way to improve performance. Environmental factors also need to be studied.
Harless: Harless advocated for front-end analysis, or a thoough analysis of a performanc problem before developing a solution.
Mager: Mager refined the criteria needed for developing effective performance objectives, and he also developed a multi-step model for diagnosing performance problems.
Geary Rummler: argues that organizational and individual performances are unique, so practitioners need to study both and develop different solutions based on their different needs; he develops a multi-step process for examining various factors of performance problems. They fall under 3 categories: goals, design, and management
How Can It Be Applied?
A school district establishes a social media honor code and clear process for reporting violations.
